The City of Nacogdoches’ “new” initiative is to help citizens clean up neighborhoods that have fallen below minimum standards set forth in the City’s Code of Ordinances. To ensure the execution of this much needed plan, the City will be participating in the “Clean Sweep” Program. The main goal of the “Clean Sweep” Program is neighborhood enhancement; this is accomplished through the combined efforts of several city departments, non-profit organizations, and concerned residents alike. Representatives include; the City’s Environmental Health Department, Police Department, Fire Department, Code Compliance Department, Animal Services Department, Planning and Zoning Department, Public Works Department, Main Street Department, Historic Sites Department, Nacogdoches County Humane Society, O’Malley Alley Cat Organization, St. Frances Rescue, and Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful.

“Being able to focus the combined man power of this program in a single neighborhood should allow for great success,” stated Tommy Wheeler, Environmental Health Manager. “Not only will cleaning up the neighborhood make it more attractive, it will, at the same time, help restore declining home values to property owners who have invested their lives in our community.”

The City will commence with this project in August 2010 and plans on committing to no less than four sweeps a year.
