NACOGDOCHES- The City of Nacogdoches pioneered an internal paper and cardboard recycling program at City Hall in July of 2010. “We wanted to take the lead to show businesses in our community how easy it is to recycle and make a difference,” said City Councilmember Shelley Brophy, “8-months into the program, the results are in, and it works.”
City Administration Intern Jacob Whitehurst took the lead on implementing the recycling program this past summer by providing each department at City Hall small 7-gallon recycling tubs. Every week Jacob utilizes a 96-gallon green cart to pick up the materials from each department and turns the materials in to the new satellite recycling drop site at the C.L. Simon Recreation Center, 1112 North Street. The center is self service and residents are encouraged to drop off any cardboard and paper recyclables. The drop site is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. If citizen’s need assistance dropping items off, they are encouraged to seek assistance from Recreation Center employees who will be glad to help them, during normal business hours.
Since June of 2010 Nacogdoches City Hall has recycled approximately 3,200 gallons of paper as of February 10, 2011. Other organizations have also followed suit, the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Municipal Court have instituted similar recycling programs in their offices. “We highly encourage the business leaders in our community to take a look at the small effort it takes to make a big impact and get their companies participating in an internal recycling program,” Brophy said.
