TxDOT improves intersections for people with disabilities

· Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) contractor, Encino Landscape, Inc., has begun installing or improving curb ramps at many corners in Nacogdoches, as part of TxDOT’s Statewide Curb Ramp Program. This statewide effort is part of department efforts to comply with the program access requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to the guidelines, if there is a visible foot path or pedestrian traffic along a road, there must be access for wheelchairs or scooters, whether or not there are sidewalks present.
· Curb ramps will be installed or upgraded at corners on the state highway system, and existing pedestrian signal buttons and marked crosswalks will be made accessible from the curb ramps.
· Construction in the Lufkin District began in Angelina County in March at a cost of $813,000 and includes work in Nacogdoches and Livingston. The contract includes work at some 250 locations but not necessarily all four corners of an intersection. There are currently no plans to install sidewalks connecting to the ramps.
· The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year
